QUALIFICATIONS AND HIRING PROCESS

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  • Must have obtained Law Enforcement Standards Certificate.
  • Must meet other requirements of Chapter 943, Florida State Statutes.

HIRING PROCESS:

  • Applicants must thoroughly and truthfully complete the Florida State University Employment Application and the Personal History Questionnaire, with all necessary documentation. (See below for details on how to apply.)
  • Applicants must undergo a physical assessment exercise and writing exercise.
  • Applicants will undergo two separate interviews.
  • Post-offer applicants must successfully complete a drug screen, physical examination, FBI/FDLE fingerprint check, background investigation, and psychological evaluation.

DUTIES:

New officers are assigned to the Patrol Division. Officers in training receive 20 weeks of in-house orientation and field training. Officers are instructed, evaluated, and observed on a daily basis. FSU Law Enforcement Officers have the opportunity to serve a unique community, where the responsibility to protect life and property is of foremost importance. FSU Police Officers apprehend criminals, prevent criminal activities through proactive patrol techniques, and enforce federal, state, and local laws. Additionally, University police officers assist other agencies when necessary and work closely with University officials to enforce University rules and regulations

SALARY & BENEFITS

Salary:

  • Starting Salary: $60,000
  • Newly employed officers receive a $5,000 onetime bonus
  • Salary incentive program: A maximum of $130.00 per month upon successful completion of advanced education and approved police training programs.
  • Overtime hours are paid at the rate of time and a half.

Benefits:

  • Annual Leave- Full-time USPS (University Support Personnel System) employees will earn annual leave based on continuous and creditable service. For the first five years, employees earn four hours every two weeks, or 104 hours per year.
  • Sick Leave- 104 working hours per year.
  • Employee tuition scholarship- USPS (University Support Personnel System) employees may take up to 6 credit hours of college courses, tuition-free, with the approval of the Florida State University Police Chief.
  • Holidays- The Florida State University observes the following holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King’s birthday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day and the Friday following Thanksgiving, Christmas Day.
  • Permanent career service employees are eligible for one personal holiday (8 hours) per fiscal year.
  • Uniforms- Duty uniforms, service weapon and duty belt are furnished by the department. Each uniformed officer receives $400.00 annually for uniform maintenance, and $150.00 shoe allowance. Each plainclothes officer receives $450.00 annually for clothing maintenance.

Career Mobility:

  • The Florida State University Police Department (FSUPD) provides career mobility in areas such as: Investigations, Training, Motors, K9, Crime Prevention, etc.

Training:

  • Stand alone training facility situated on 80+ acres.
  • Advanced and Specialized Trainers on staff.
  • Officers receive an average of 459 hours of advanced, specialized, and high liability training every four years.

Equivalency of Training (EOT): Be hired and certified at the same time:

  • For out of state or federal officers. 
  • Previously certified Florida officers with a four or more-year break in service.  
  • Have worked at least 1-year, fulltime, as a sworn officer in the discipline you are seeking exemption.
  • Received training in that discipline which is comparable to Florida’s full basic recruit curriculum and/or previously certified in Florida.
